System Types & Glossary

Audio Recording
A system which captures and stores sound waves originating from music or voice, in analog or digital format; also called sound recording.

Audio/Video Distribution
A system which spreads different forms of media through various outlets, such as broadcast, DVD or CD, and internet streaming.

Digital Art
A system which enables artists to create or display their art electronically, in two or three dimensions.

Digital Cinema
A system which distributes and projects motion pictures using a server and high resolution digital projector, in conformance with Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) standards; also called D-Cinema.

Digital Signage
A system which uses one or more electronic displays to communicate advertising, information, or entertainment which originates from a shared, central source.

Digital Video Recording
A system which captures a live or broadcast source on a disk drive or other electronic memory device for future playback; also called DVR.

Distance Learning
A system which allows teachers and learners, separated by time or place, to communicate using video and/or computer technologies; also called distributed learning.

Electronic Voting
A system which gathers, counts, stores and displays votes which are cast electronically; also called e-voting.

Electronic Whiteboarding
A system which enables one or more people to create and annotate images in real time, using electronic displays in multiple locations.

Foreground Music
A system which reproduces music at a quality and sound level appropriate for active listening, usually for marketing purposes.

High Definition Audio
A system which reproduces 8-channel audio of such quality that it is identical to listening to the source.

High Definition Video
A system which reproduces images at a higher resolution than standard definition video, generally at resolutions of 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Live Broadcast
A system which transmits audio or video directly to the recipient, as opposed to recording and replaying the source.

Live Music
A system which amplifies and transmits music performed in person through a loudspeaker system using microphones and amplifiers; also called sound reinforcement.

Media Retrieval
A system which locates and reproduces stored audio or visual files.

Motion Picture Film Projection
A system which displays visual media stored on film, as opposed to video stored electronically.
PACS Display
A system which displays medical images stored in a digital format, frequently allowing remote access.

Remote System Control
A system which allows a user to access and control a system from a separate location.

Security Monitoring
Examining a network to protect it against risk and external threats.

Simulation
A system which models another system, such that its behavior may be observed.

Simultaneous Interpretation
A system which allows an interpreter to convert a person’s words into an identical message in another language, which is then transmitted electronically as spoken communication, sign language, or closed caption text; also improperly called simultaneous translation.

Surface Computing
A system which gives users the ability to interact with graphical software applications using multiple fingers on a flat display; also called multi-touch.

Telepresence
A system which allows a user from a remote location to interact as if he were present in the room.

Telemedicine
A system which allows a remote user to consult, examine, and/or perform simple procedures on the patient.

3-D Display
A system which creates the illusion of depth on a video or film screen by providing different images to the viewer’s right and left eye, usually with polarized anaglyph (passive) or LCD shutter (active) eye glasses.

Video Streaming
A system which allows the user to view video content without downloading it.

Videoconferencing
A system which allows two or more people from multiple locations to communicate with audio and video.

Video Display
A system which displays visual content, including images and video.

Video Post Production
A system which allows editing and the addition of various effects to a video after the actual filming.

Voice Reinforcement
A system which transmits and amplifies a speaker’s voice over a speaker system. Also called public address or PA.

Webcast
A transmission of audio or video over the Internet, as opposed to more traditional broadcast methods.
